The story

The S-4 was the first self-propelled combine made in the Soviet Union, following the tractor-drawn S-1 Stalinets of the early 1930s. Production began at Krasnoyarsk in 1947 and spread to plants at Tula, Syzran and Taganrog.

It used a ZIS lorry-derived petrol engine, a 4 m cutter bar, an 865 mm threshing drum and four straw walkers, and drive to the front axle ran through belts, so speed could not be varied smoothly. A modernised S-4M followed in 1955 before the SK-3 replaced it in 1958, after 29,582 had been built.

East Germany built it under licence from 1954 as the Fortschritt E 170 series, swapping the thirsty petrol engine for an IFA diesel.

Did you knowNo S-2 or S-3 combine is known to have reached production, so the Soviet line jumped from the towed S-1 straight to the self-propelled S-4.
