The story

The E1A, sold as the New Major, was designed by Ford of Britain and went on public show at the Royal Smithfield Show in late 1951. Ford designed a family of four-cylinder engines for it, so buyers could choose diesel, petrol or vaporising oil from the same basic block.

The direct-injection diesel started from cold without a petrol start, and it soon outsold the others; by 1953 nearly all Majors left the line as diesels. A six-speed gearbox, three-point linkage and hydraulic lift came as standard, while power steering and a dual clutch were extras.

The New Major was also sold in North America from 1953. It gave way to the more powerful Power Major in 1958, and to the Super Major in 1960.

About these figures. Figures are for the diesel. 40.5 hp (SAE) at 1,600 rpm is the brochure rating listed by Koneviesti; the petrol and TVO engine (3.26 L, 95 mm bore) was rated at 39.5 hp. Other sources quote 34 to 37 hp at the PTO and about 30 hp at the drawbar for early diesels, and later Mark II tractors are often credited with more, so belt and drawbar figures are left blank.
