The story

JCB launched the Fastrac in 1991 as the first purpose-built farm tractor with suspension on both axles, and the 4000 series followed in October 2014 with the 4160, 4190 and 4220. The 4220 is the top model.

It has a six-cylinder 6.6-litre AGCO Power engine and the same stepless gearbox Fendt uses, run by JCB's own software. The 4000 series has a forward-sloping cab and self-levelling hydro-pneumatic suspension front and rear, and four-wheel steering returned as an option.

Because it is built for road work, it can legally travel faster on British roads than most tractors, up to 63 km/h. A Stage V engine with a particulate filter arrived in 2019.

Did you knowA heavily modified Fastrac set a tractor speed record of 135 mph in 2019, but the standard 4220 tops out at about 39 mph.

About these figures. JCB quotes 163 kW / 218 hp rated and 175 kW / 235 hp maximum. Farmers Weekly and the Irish Farmers Journal give 217 hp rated at 2,100 rpm and 235 hp maximum at 1,900 rpm. Quoted peak torque differs between sources (700 Nm in Farmers Weekly, 1,000 Nm on JCB's US page), so none is given here.
