The story
Claas launched the Dominator 80 in 1971 and the larger Dominator 100 in 1972, moving the Harsewinkel firm into the 5 and 6 straw walker classes. The range then grew in waves: the 85 and 105 in 1974 brought electronic throughput monitoring, followed by the 5-series in 1975, 6-series in 1979 and 8-series in 1982.
In 1981 the Dominator 116 CS replaced straw walkers with eight separation cylinders, a layout later sold as the Commandor CS. After German reunification the Dominator 208 Mega added an accelerator drum ahead of the main drum for up to 30 per cent more throughput.
The Dominator became one of Europe's best selling combines and helped Claas lead the European market in the 1990s.

About these figures. The Dominator was a whole family, from the 5-walker 80 to big 8-series and Mega machines, so figures differ by model. Engine, tank, header and weight shown are for the Dominator 105 (1974–1979) with the Perkins V8.605; the Dominator 80 used a 6-cylinder Perkins 6.372 of 120 hp and a 3,400 litre tank, and Mercedes-Benz engines were also fitted. Claas dates the Dominator 80 to 1971, while some data lists show it on sale from 1970. Weight is without cab.
