The story

The 9600 was the top model of John Deere's 9000 series, launched for 1989 to replace the long-running 20 Series. Deere engineers described the range in a 1989 technical paper as the result of a simultaneous engineering effort shaped by farmer surveys.

Changes included a larger diameter cylinder and concave, a cleaning system designed to cope with slopes, gearcases in place of many belt drives, hydrostatic ground drive and electronically governed engines. The 9600 used five straw walkers 4.5 m long.

Through the early 1990s it gained power and, in 1993, HarvesTrak. It was replaced by the 9610 in 1998, and the 9000 series ended in 1999 when the 50 Series arrived.

Did you knowThe 9600's sloping-ground cleaning system and seat-mounted header disengage switch were both highlighted when Deere presented the 9000 series to engineers in Iowa in May 1989.

About these figures. Power rose during production: John Deere lists the 9600 going from 200 hp to 260 hp between 1990 and 1993, and New Generation engines arrived in 1992. Tank and header figures are from a 1992 French price list; larger US platforms were also sold.
