The story

The MTZ-80 was a thorough redesign of the earlier MTZ-50, ordered by the Soviet government and finished in 1972. Series production at Minsk Tractor Works began in 1974, alongside the four-wheel-drive MTZ-82, and the tractor has stayed in production in updated forms ever since.

Its 4.75-litre D-240 diesel ran faster than the older engine, raising both power and road speed, and the gearbox gave 18 forward speeds. In 1975 the Soviet science and technology committee named it machine of the year.

Sold as the Belarus across the Eastern Bloc and far beyond, it became one of the most numerous tractors ever built, with cotton, forestry and crawler versions developed from it.

Did you knowA crawler tractor based on it, the T-70, went into production in Kishinev in 1975.

Number madeAbout 1.5 million MTZ-80 tractors by 1995 (Russian Wikipedia figure; how it splits between the 80 and 82 is unclear)

About these figures. 80 hp (metric, about 59 kW) at 2,200 rpm is the figure given by Russian Wikipedia and the Finnish Koneviesti data; Russian Wikipedia says the earliest engines gave 75 hp. Bore 110 mm, stroke 125 mm. Weight is the Koneviesti figure for the two-wheel-drive tractor (3,820 kg for the MTZ-82); Russian Wikipedia gives 3.6 t as the full mass. Agriland reports that an MTZ-80 was tested at Nebraska, but our Nebraska index has no matching test, so none is given.
