The story
The 4430 arrived on 19 August 1972 as part of John Deere's Generation II range, the 30 series that replaced the long-running 20 series. It took over from the 4320 and quickly became the best seller of the new line.
Power came from the turbocharged 404 cubic inch six-cylinder diesel, good for a little over 125 PTO horsepower. The big news was the Sound-Gard body, a cab designed with Henry Dreyfuss Associates that sat the driver in a quieter, sealed space and set the look of Deere tractors for two decades.
Buyers could choose Syncro-Range, Quad-Range, Power Shift or a creeper gearbox. Some owners felt the engine lacked pull at low revs and that the rockshaft lifted too little, points Deere addressed with the 4440 in 1977.
