The story
Steyr launched the 188 in 1960 as the first of a new generation, often called the anniversary series, replacing the 180 family that had started Steyr tractor building in 1947. It was lighter, lower and more stylish than the older models, and was designed with front loaders and steep Alpine slopes in mind.
The two-cylinder diesel was new, developed alongside Steyr's truck engines, with a shorter stroke that let it run faster. Other firsts for Steyr included a range gearbox with eight forward speeds, a portal rear axle for extra clearance and Bosch weight transfer on the hydraulics.
Three-cylinder models such as the 190 followed from 1964, and the 188 itself was built until 1966.
Did you knowIts new engine was developed alongside Steyr's truck engines and revved higher than the long-stroke units it replaced.

Weight is the Koneviesti figure, which that source marks as approximate.
