The story
Versatile built Big Roy in Winnipeg in 1977 as a bid for the title of world's largest farm tractor, naming it after co-founder Roy Robinson. The 1080 had four driven axles on eight 30.5x32 tyres and bent between the second and third axles.
Unusually, the 600 hp Cummins diesel sat on the rear half, while the cab rode up front behind a 550 gallon fuel tank, so a rear camera fed a monitor inside. The cab was air conditioned and seated three.
Big Roy never went into production: running all four tyres on each side in one track compacted the soil, and Versatile's later big tractors went back to four-wheel drive. The only example went to the Manitoba Agricultural Museum and was restored by Versatile for its 50th anniversary in 2016.
