The story
The 4440 was one of the Iron Horses, the 40 series John Deere announced in the September to October 1977 issue of The Furrow after halting the Waterloo lines that summer to retool. It replaced the 4430 and answered its weak points.
A larger 466 cubic inch turbo diesel gave far stronger pulling at low and middle revs, the rockshaft could lift about a quarter more, and a lift-assist cylinder took capacity to 6,774 lb. The cooling system, hydraulic pump and Sound-Gard cab were all improved, and the tractor came in nearly a ton heavier.
Deere dropped the Syncro-Range, leaving Quad-Range and Power Shift. Sales averaged more than 13,000 a year, making it one of the most popular tractors Deere ever built.
