The story
The 7000 was in effect a turbocharged Ford 5000, and it appeared at the Royal Smithfield Show in late 1971. The idea came from inside Ford's British sales team: a turbo kit made by Northrop Tractors was fitted to a spare 5000 demonstrator, which was then sold to a Hampshire farmer to prove it in work before the engineers were won over.
The result gave about a quarter more power from the same 4.2 litre four-cylinder engine, plus a stronger 13 inch clutch. The 7000 also launched Load Monitor, which sensed drivetrain torque to adjust implement depth.
Noisy and cramped by later standards, it won over tillage farmers and stayed in production until 1975.
