The story
The 1486 belonged to International Harvester's 86 series, the Pro Ag Line unveiled in autumn 1976 at McCormick Place in Chicago to replace the 66 series. Its biggest change was the Control Center cab, moved about a foot and a half further forward, with doors on both sides, curved glass, heavy insulation, air conditioning and grouped controls.
The cab sat on rubber mounts to cut noise and vibration, and hydraulic clutch and brake controls replaced mechanical linkages. The 1486 used the turbocharged 7.1 litre DT-436 six-cylinder diesel and, with the 1586, was one of the two most powerful models in the range.
V8 engines were dropped for the series. Production ran until 1981, a few years before IH sold its farm machinery business to Case.
