The story
The 574 was one of the first two Worldwide tractors International Harvester launched from its Doncaster factory in autumn 1970, alongside the three-cylinder 454. It used a four-cylinder direct-injection diesel, replacing the pre-chamber engines of older IH tractors, and quickly became the most popular model in the '74 series.
A synchromesh gearbox with eight forward speeds was standard, the Torque Amplifier could double the ratios, and IH also offered hydrostatic drive. Hydrostatic steering, oil-immersed disc brakes and a fuel tank over the rear axle, which added weight where it helped grip, were part of the design.
Smaller and larger models filled out the range by 1973, and about 77,000 '74 series tractors left Doncaster before the 84 series took over in 1977.
