The story
After the Second World War Caterpillar tested several big crawler prototypes, first with an adapted D13000 engine, before deciding the job needed a new power unit. Ten pre-production D9X machines went into evaluation in 1954, and full production of the D9 began in 1955 at East Peoria, Illinois.
Its six-cylinder D353 diesel was the first turbocharged engine in a Cat track-type tractor, rated at 286 hp and raised to 320 hp in the second year. Weighing about 29 tons bare, it was built with direct drive (18A) or a torque converter (19A), and over 4,300 were made.
The D9E replaced it in 1959, followed by the long-running D9G, the D9H, the elevated-sprocket D9L of 1980 and later the D9N, D9R and D9T.
